ForestPaths partner wins ‘Best Poster Award’ during the 26th IUFRO conference

11 July 2024

ForestPaths partner Cleo Orfanidou, representing the European Forest Institute (EFI), won the ‘Best Poster Award’ in Division 5 - Forest Products - for her poster on ‘Next-generation carbon stock and stock change modelling in wood use: towards contributing to climate change mitigation pathways’ during the 26th IUFRO conference in Stockholm, Sweden.

The 26th International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) conference took place between 23-29 June 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden, with the theme “Forests & Society towards 2050” where ForestPaths had the opportunity to participate through various poster sessions and presentations.

Cleo Orfanidou, from EFI, held a poster session showcasing EFI and VITO's research on improving the resolution of the wood sector by including added-value wood product markets and post-consumer wood. This enhancement is crucial for accurately estimating the European forest-based bioeconomy's mitigation potential. To address this need, an open-source Python tool ‘aiphoria’ was developed, enhancing temporal accounting and tracking of wood product’s supply chains (for example, from harvesting to industrial processing, end use and post-use treatment). aiphoria supports a more accurate assessment of the carbon storage potential of wood products and thus provides a more accurate information for analysing the substitution potentials of wood products.

Built on the Open Dynamic Material Systems Model (ODYM), aiphoria allows dynamic material systems analysis and interactive Sankey diagrams to map wood material flows over time. Ideal for assessing product flows and carbon accounting, aiphoria will soon integrate multiple indicators, making it essential for accurate wood material flows and carbon storage assessments, but also for analysing socioeconomic impacts.
